Die Slot Canyons Big Horn und Zebra liegen an der Old Sheffield Road, östlich von Escalante, Utah.

Von Escalante, Utah, fahren Sie zirka 9,7 Meilen Richtung Osten (Boulder) und biegen dort in die ungeteerte Old Sheffield Road ab (GPS-Koordinaten siehe oben). Rund 2,8 Meilen sind es auf dieser ungeteerten Straße, die bei trockenen Verhältnissen auch mit einem PKW befahren werden kann, bis Sie rechts einen kleinen, kaum erkennbaren Parkplatz finden.

Es geht hinunter in den Big Horn Canyon.

Big Horn and Zebra slot canyons are located on Old Sheffield Road, east of Escalante, Utah.

From Escalante, Utah, drive about 9.7 miles east (Boulder) and turn onto the unpaved Old Sheffield Road (see above for GPS coordinates). It is about 2.8 miles on this unpaved road, which can be driven in a passenger car in dry conditions, until you find a small, barely visible parking area on the right.

It goes down into the Big Horn Canyon.

Die Buffington Pockets liegen in den Muddy Mountains, südwestlich des Valley of Fire, nordöstlich von Las Vegas, Nevada.

Von Las Vegas fahren Sie 35 Meilen (56,3 km) auf der Interstate 15 nach Nordosten in Richtung Salt Lake City. Am Exit 75 verlassen Sie die Interstate und fahren weitere 3,4 Meilen (5,47 km) nach Südosten den Valley of Fire Highway. Hier macht die Valley of Fire Road eine Biegung nach links, Sie fahren gerade aus weiter auf den ungeteerten Back Country Bi-Way. Die Dirtroad wird zunehmend schlechter und steiniger. Nach 5,1 Meilen stellen Sie Ihr Auto links auf den Parkplatz und Trailhead (GPS-Koordinaten siehe oben). Ich empfehle ein High Clearance Fahrzeug mit guten Reifen.

Buffington Pockets are located in the Muddy Mountains, southwest of the Valley of Fire, northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada.

From Las Vegas, drive 35 miles (56.3 km) northeast on Interstate 15 toward Salt Lake City. At Exit 75, exit the interstate and continue southeast another 3.4 miles (5.47 km) on the Valley of Fire Highway. Here the Valley of Fire Road makes a bend to the left, and you continue straight on the unpaved Back Country Bi-Way. The dirt road gets progressively worse and rockier. After 5.1 miles, turn your car left into the parking lot and trailhead (see above for GPS coordinates). I recommend a high clearance vehicle with good tires.

As you continue to hike the dirt road, you will already encounter the "Eye of the Buffington Pockets" on the upper left watching you.

Yant Flat ist eine Hochebene nordöstlich von Saint George, Utah.

Fahren Sie von Saint George auf der Interstate 15 nach Norden und nehmen Sie die Ausfahrt 22. Es geht praktisch gerade aus auf der Main Street durch Leeds. Ziemlich am nordöstlichen Ende des Dorfes geht es nach links in die Silver Reef Road, unter der Autobahn durch und nach drei Meilen wird die Straße im Dixie National Forest ungeteert. Die Dirtroad führt zuerst am Leeds Creek entlang und umrundet anschließend das Red Reef nach links. Bis zum Big Hollow Creek ist die Straße wunderbar zu befahren, erst die letzte Meile wird ein wenig rauer und ist hier vermutlich für PKWs nicht mehr geeignet. Sie parken an einem von maximal zwei Möglichkeiten direkt am Trailhead, gegenüber der Road 903, der sich mitten auf der Yant Flat befindet.

Sie steigen auf felsigem Untergrund hinunter und genießen die farbenfrohe Landschaft mit den außergewöhnlichen Felsstrukturen.

Yant Flat is a plateau northeast of Saint George, Utah.

Head north from Saint George on Interstate 15 and take Exit 22, going virtually straight on Main Street through Leeds. Pretty much at the northeast end of the village, turn left onto Silver Reef Road, go under the freeway and after three miles the road becomes unpaved in the Dixie National Forest. The dirt road first skirts Leeds Creek and then circles Red Reef to the left. Up to Big Hollow Creek the road is wonderful to drive on, only the last mile gets a little rougher and is probably not suitable for passenger cars here. You will park at one of a maximum of two options right at the trailhead, across from Road 903, which is in the middle of Yant Flat.

You descend on rocky ground and enjoy the colorful landscape with the unusual rock structures.

Der Valley of Fire State Park liegt nordöstlich von Las Vegas, Nevada.

Von Las Vegas fahren Sie 35 Meilen (56,3 km) auf der Interstate 15 nach Nordosten in Richtung Salt Lake City. Valley of Fire State Park is located northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada.

From Las Vegas, drive 35 miles (56.3 km) northeast on Interstate 15 toward Salt Lake City. At Exit 75, exit the interstate and travel another 12.18 miles (19.6 km) southeast on Valley of Fire Highway 169 to the state park. Head toward Vistor Center, turn onto Mouse Tank Road, and follow the road 4.8 miles. There is a parking area on the left side of the road that is the official trailhead to Fire Wave; you will also park here.

Tour 1 (Fire Cave Arch - Thunderstorm Arch - Crazy Hill - White Domes Slot - White Domes Arch - Spider Arch): The trail takes you south.

Edmaiers Secret sind Felder von sogenannten Brainrocks; sie liegen in der Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, östlich des Einganges zur Buckskin Gulch, Utah.

Westlich von Page, Arizona, fahren Sie über den Glen Canyon Dam in Richtung Kanab, Utah, auf der US 89, auf der Sie rund 36 Meilen bleiben. Nachdem es gebirgig wird (The Cockscomb) und die 89er eine Schleife nach rechts zieht, geht links die ungeteerte House Rock Valley Road ab. Rund 4,6 Meilen sind es bis zum Buckskin Gulch Trailhead. Sie brauchen für diese Wanderung keine Permit, müssen aber trotzdem "Eintritt" bezahlen (6 USD in 2011). Das Geld ist passend in ein Kuvert, das man am Trailhead findet, zu legen.

Der Weg beginnt am südöstlichen Ende des Parkplatzes und er ist anfangs gut sichtbar.

Edmaier's Secret are fields of what are called brainrocks; they are located in the Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, east of the entrance to Buckskin Gulch, Utah.

West of Page, Arizona, head over Glen Canyon Dam toward Kanab, Utah, on US 89, which you stay on for about 36 miles. After it gets mountainous (The Cockscomb) and the highway 89 loops to the right, the unpaved House Rock Valley Road exits to the left. It is about 4.6 miles to the Buckskin Gulch trailhead. You don't need a permit for this hike, but you still have to pay "admission" ($6 in 2011). The money is to be placed appropriately in an envelope found at the trailhead.

The trail starts at the southeast end of the parking lot and it is clearly visible at the beginning.

Die White Domes befinden sich auf dem Canaan Mountain. Der Trailhead zum Water Canyon liegt nordöstlich der Big Plain und nördlich des Dorfes Hildale, östlich von Hurricane, Utah.

Fahren Sie von Hurricane auf die 59, weiter durch das wunderschöne Apple Valley und die Big Plain nach Hildale. Weiter geht es an das nordöstliche Ende von Hidale bis zur Water Canyon Road. Diese Dirt-Road, sie folgt dem Short Creek, führt Sie 1,98 Meilen bis zum Parkplatz und Trailhead. Diese Dirtroad hat tiefe Spurrillen, die man jedoch durch eine geschickte Streckenwahl gut überfahren kann. Ein Fahrzeug mit hoher Bodenfreiheit empfehle ich trotzdem.

Sehr sandig beginnt Ihr Weg am Creek entlang nach Norden und die Hoffnung, dass der Anlauf zur Bergtour gemächlich erfolgt, verfliegt schon bald. Hoch und runter. Teilweise steiles Terrain und der tiefe Sand sorgen bereits zu Beginn für ein paar extra Diastolen und Systolen des vor Freude bumpernden Zentralorgans.

The White Domes are located on Canaan Mountain. The trailhead to Water Canyon is northeast of the Big Plain and north of the village of Hildale, east of Hurricane, Utah.

Drive from Hurricane onto 59, continuing through beautiful Apple Valley and the Big Plain to Hildale. Continue to the northeast end of Hidale to Water Canyon Road. This dirt road, it follows Short Creek, takes you 1.98 miles to the parking area and trailhead. This dirt road has deep ruts, but they can be easily negotiated with smart route selection. I still recommend a high clearance vehicle.

Very sandy, your path begins along the creek to the north and the hope that the run-up to the mountain tour will be leisurely soon evaporates. Up and down. Partially steep terrain and the deep sand provide already at the beginning for a few extra diastoles and systoles of the central organ bumping with joy.

Der sogenannte King of Wings, ein Hoodoo mit einem überdimensionalen Flügel, befindet sich in einem Seitenarm der Ah-shi-sle-pah Wash, im San Juan Basin südlich von Farmington, New Mexico.

Fahren Sie in Farmington auf die NM 64 und biegen Sie auf die NM 371, auch bekannt als Bisti Highway, nach Süden ab. Bleiben Sie von der Kreuzung 45,7 Meilen auf der 371er und biegen Sie dann nach links in die ungeteerte CR 7650 ein. Dieser breiten Dirtroad (die letzte Meile heißt sie eigentlich Bia 7023), die auch von großen LKWs befahren wird, folgen Sie nun 10,2 Meilen. Hier ist links von der Straße die erste Parkmöglichkeit für Fahrzeuge, die die nun nach rechts führende Dirtroad nicht fahren können. Diese Road hat einen hohen "Mittelstreifen" und führt weitere 0,9 Meilen bis zu einem Windrad, an dem Sie parken. Sie sind am Trailhead.

Ja, es gibt in der Hauptwash auch wunderbare Hoodoos mit Flügel, aber der King of Wings thront wahrlich königlich auf einer Erhebung und war diese kleine Anstrengung wert.

The so-called King of Wings, a hoodoo with an oversized wing, is located in a branch of the Ah-shi-sle-pah Wash, in the San Juan Basin south of Farmington, New Mexico.

Enter Farmington on NM 64 and turn south on NM 371, also known as Bisti Highway. Stay on 371 for 45.7 miles from the intersection, then turn left onto unpaved CR 7650. Now follow this wide dirt road (the last mile it is actually called Bia 7023), which is also used by large trucks, for 10.2 miles. Here, to the left of the road is the first parking area for vehicles that cannot drive the dirt road that now goes to the right. This road has a high "median" and continues another 0.9 miles to a windmill where you park. You are at the trailhead.

Yes, there are wonderful hoodoos with wings in the main wash as well, but the King of Wings truly sits regally atop an elevation and was worth this small effort.

Der Sidestep Canyon, ein Seitencanyon der Wahweap Wash, und das sogenannte Rainbow Valley, ein Seitenarm des White Rock Canyons, liegen im White Sands-Gebiet des Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments (GSENM) in Utah.

Fahren Sie von Page, Arizona auf der US 89 über den Glen Canyon Damm. Fahren Sie nach dem Damm 20,1 Meilen auf der US 89 und biegen Sie dann nach rechts in eine Dirtroad ein (GPS-Koordinaten siehe oben). Die Einfahrt kommt relativ abrupt nach einem Hügel, so dass sie für nachfolgende Fahrzeuge auch spät sichtbar ist.

Die rote Sandpiste ist relativ gut zu fahren, nach einer Meilen sind Sie im Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM). Fahren Sie noch weitere 2,16 Meilen, also insgesamt 3,16 Meilen, bis eine Ebene an einem kleinen Damm genug Platz bietet, um zu parken. Das ist Ihr Trailhead (GPS-Koordinaten siehe oben).

Noch ein Hinweis für PKW-Fahrer: Auf dem letzten Stück, nachdem es bergab geht, laufen zwei Rinnen des Coyote Creeks quer durch die Fahrbahn. Das könnte für einen PKW ein Problem werden. Falls Sie die größere, nämlich die zweite Rinne nicht bewältigen können, kommt kurz vorher (ca. 0,3 Meilen) rechts ein verlassener Coral, in dem man wunderbar parken kann. Da selbst an der ersten Rinne Platz zum parken wäre, könnte man bereits hier sein Auto stehen lassen. Klar, dass sich der Weg entsprechend verlängert.

Gehen Sie vom Parkplatz nach Nordosten direkt auf den rechten Bergrücken zu. Dort treffen Sie auf einen Trail, dem Sie dem Bergrücken hoch folgen. Wandern Sie anschließend möglichst auf kürzestem Weg zur Zielkoordinate.

Sidestep Canyon, a side canyon of the Wahweap Wash, and the so-called Rainbow Valley, a side branch of White Rock Canyon, are located in the White Sands area of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM) in Utah.

Drive from Page, Arizona on US 89 over Glen Canyon Dam. After the dam, travel 20.1 miles on US 89 and then turn right onto a dirt road. The entrance comes relatively abruptly after a hill, so it is also visible late to following vehicles.

The red sand road is relatively easy to drive, and after one mile you are in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM). Drive another 2.16 miles, for a total of 3.16 miles, until a flat area at a small dam gives you enough room to park. This is your trailhead.

Another note for car drivers: On the last stretch after going downhill, two gullies of Coyote Creek run across the roadway. This could be a problem for a passenger car. If you can't handle the bigger one, namely the second gully, there is an abandoned coral on the right just before (about 0.3 miles) where you can park wonderfully. Since there would be room to park even at the first gully, you could already leave your car here. Clearly, that the way is extended accordingly.

From the parking lot, head northeast directly toward the ridge on the right. There you will meet a trail, which you follow up the ridge. Then hike the shortest way possible to the target coordinate.

Biegen Sie in die County Road 7870 nach rechts ab. Auch diese Straße ist bei normalen Verhältnissen sehr gut zu befahren. Folgen Sie dieser Straße (Hauptpiste), sie wird zeitweise zur CR 7875, rund 7,6 Meilen und nehmen Sie dann eine unbenannte Jeep Road nach links.

Bei normalen Straßenverhältnissen ist es bis hier möglich, mit dem PKW zu fahren, die letzte Meile jedoch benötigt unbedingt ein Auto mit hoher Bodenfreiheit. Möglicherweise parken Sie vorher und gehen die letzte Meile auf der Jeep Road zu Fuß. Ansonsten fahren Sie die Jeeproad eine gute Meile bis zu einer Kreuzung und parken dort Ihr Auto. Das ist der Trailhead (GPS-Koordinaten siehe oben).

PS: Andere Beschreibungen im Netz empfehlen bzw. schildern die Weiterfahrt nach rechts, um weiter östlich an der Wash zu parken. Möglicherweise rentiert sich das aber nicht.

Das Terrain ist je nach Jahreszeit etwas stachelig und so schauen Sie, dass Sie möglichst schnell hinunter in die Ah-shi-sle-pah Wash kommen.

The so-called Valley of Dreams is located south of Farmington, in the San Juan Basin, in Ah-she-sli-pah Wash, New Mexico.

Enter Farmington on NM 64 and turn south on NM 371, also known as Bisti Highway. Stay on 371 for 45.7 miles from the intersection, then turn left onto unpaved County Road 7650. You will now follow this wide dirt road, which is also used by large trucks, for 7.9 miles.

Turn right onto County Road 7870. This road is also very passable in normal conditions. Follow this road (main dirt road), it becomes CR 7875 at times, about 7.6 miles and then take an unnamed Jeep Road to the left.

In normal road conditions, it is possible to drive a car up to here, but the last mile absolutely requires a high clearance car. You may want to park beforehand and walk the last mile on Jeep Road. Otherwise, drive the jeep road a good mile to a junction and park your car there. This is the trailhead.

PS: Other descriptions in the net recommend or describe the continuation to the right to park further east at the wash. However, this may not be profitable.

The terrain is a bit prickly depending on the time of year, so look to get down to Ah-shi-sle-pah Wash as quickly as possible.

Der Willis Creek, ein Slot Canyon, liegt an der Skutumpah Road, im Grand Staircase Escalante NM, rund 10 Meilen südlich von Cannonville, Utah.

Wenn Sie in Cannonville die Cottonwood Canyon Road südlich rund 2,9 Meilen gefahren sind, geht rechts die Road 500, die Skutumpah Road, ab. Nach weiteren 6,1 Meilen sind Sie am Parkplatz und Trailhead. Alternativ könnten Sie von Page die Cottonwood Canyon Road nehmen und müssten bis zur Abzweigung rund 42 Meilen fahren. Eine weitere Alternative wäre von Kanab über den Johnson Canyon und die Skutumpah Road. Es wird für alle Wege ein High Clearence Fahrzeug empfohlen, mit Vorsicht und Geduld funktioniert es auf allen genannten Straßen auch mit einem PKW.

Vom Parkplatz gehen Sie in östlicher auf einem gut sichtbaren Trail, der bald in das Flussbett führt.

Willis Creek, a slot canyon, is located on Skutumpah Road, in Grand Staircase Escalante NM, about 10 miles south of Cannonville, Utah.

Once you have traveled south on Cottonwood Canyon Road in Cannonville for about 2.9 miles, Road 500, Skutumpah Road, will exit to the right. After another 6.1 miles you will be at the parking area and trailhead. Alternatively, you could take Cottonwood Canyon Road from Page and would have to drive about 42 miles to the turnoff. Another alternative would be from Kanab via Johnson Canyon and Skutumpah Road. High clearance is recommended for all roads, with caution and patience it works fine with a passenger car on all the roads mentioned.

From the parking lot, head east on a highly visible trail that soon enters the riverbed.
